Hunting in pairs
'Midnight in Paris''A Dangerous Method'Some of the year's strongest ensembles were assembled by casting directors with long collaborative histories with particular A-list helmers.Laray Mayfield met David Fincher on the very day she arrived in L.A., and "after 25 years he's my dear friend," through six features that range from "Fight Club" to the forthcoming "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo."Ellen Lewis' "unbelievably special relationship" with Martin Scorsese began with his segment of "NY Stories" and "GoodFellas" through 12 features, including this year's "Hugo."It's a classic chicken/egg situation. Did these teams become friends because they've worked together so often? Or have they collaborated so often as a result of the friendship?"Um you know, I think that in our case ah, gosh, it's really hard to separate that out," confesses a thoughtful Juliet Taylor with a halting delivery not dissimilar to that of her boss on more than 30 films to date, Woody Allen."We spend a huge amount of time talking on the phone, just shooting the breeze about stuff," she says. "Yes, he's really a good friend. But I do think that even though we're gossiping about other stuff, the professional aspect runs really deep."For "Midnight in Paris," she says, "we spent at least a month thinking of different casts and different age groups to make the story work, more than we had on any other picture." At the same time, she and her team "did a huge amount of research" on the film's 1920s historical figures, trying to match their actual ages and appearance. "It's great if it's exact, but it's good sometimes to take a step out, so you have a little freedom to play with it."Deirdre Bowen says she and David Cronenberg, with whom she has worked on 10 films to date, "have actually grown together based on two things: an appreciation for really strong faces, and a really healthy respect for the script and what story is being told. We then find the right faces to be able to tell that story."A face likely to surprise viewers of "A Dangerous Method" is that of Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud, in light of two earlier, violence-oriented turns with the helmer. But, she argues, "Freud is someone who will go out and do battle intellectually, and the character in 'Eastern Promises' will go out and do battle physically. There's a common element there. We knew Freud needed to be a very vigorous performance in order for the script to live."It doesn't hurt a thesp, then, to share the filmmakers' past. Lisbeth Salander, the eponymous "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," was a plum part for which Mayfield says "lots and lots of girls wanted to be considered." But Rooney Mara was a known quantity to Fincher and Mayfield after "The Social Network." "We could tell early on that she was going to be a strong contender" to portray "this teeny, tiny little girl who has this tremendous strength inside her."This year, U.K-based Fiona Weir racked up her fourth "Harry Potter" film (and fifth credit overall) with David Yates, and a third consecutive credit with Clint Eastwood on "J. Edgar."Weir knew "as a filmmaker, David's taste is quite naturalistic, while the world of Harry is quite heightened. So it was exciting to bring in people like Peter Mullan and Helen McCrory, actors from a very different, natural background, and bring his taste into that world."As for Eastwood, she marvels at "his appreciation of what it costs actors in the casting process, let alone being put into the movie.""He often prefers to cast with actors who have read with me on tape, because if he's in the same room with them it's very clear they're in the presence of a screen icon, and it makes the pressure even greater."(Icons evidently have their own ways of working. For years, Allen wouldn't even read actors, Taylor says. "He'd meet them for a minute or two. They wouldn't even sit down. He'd say 'It's really nice to meet you, thanks for coming in,' and it would all be off whatever visceral reaction he had.")In the end, what solidifies the director/casting director relationship is a special kind of chemistry renewed with each successful endeavor. "I certainly enjoy the other filmmakers I work with," says Mayfield, "but because David (Fincher) and I know each other so well and have a shorthand, there's probably a more natural flow than it would be with people you don't know as well."A marriage of minds and talents, like any marriage, will have its rocky moments. "I know Woody's taste really well," Taylor says, "and I almost always agree with it. If I think he's making a big mistake, he really listens. He definitely won't go with someone if I don't think it's a good idea -- but if I think someone is a good idea and he doesn't, he can be an immovable object, obviously."Weir similarly summarizes her work with Yates. "David and I might not start in the same place, but we always end up there."When the marriage works, it's wonderful. "When I met Debi Mazar I felt she was perfect for the role of (wiseguy mistress) Sandy in 'GoodFellas,'?" Lewis recalls. "Many times the casting process is about creating the vision of the director, and sometimes the director has something so specific in his mind that you're really playing almost a guessing game with it."I remember how exciting it was that someone whom I felt was perfect for this role, he also felt was perfect. And you just pump your fist in the air, and you're like, 'That's so great that this is what you had in mind. Because so did I!'"SAG Awards: The Ensemble:Hunting in pairs | Jay displays eagle for rising talent | Expert opinions | Primetime wholes made up of great parts | SAG winners tend to head to Oscar glory Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

How Did Dancings J.R. Martinez Woo His Ladylove?
First Published: November 11, 2011 2:32 PM EST Credit: Access Hollywood Caption J.R. Martinez celebrates Veterans Day at Access Hollywood Live on November 11, 2011LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Dancing with the Stars frontrunner J.R. Martinez stopped by Access Hollywood Live on Friday where the beloved actor celebrated Veterans Day with Billy Bush and Kit Hoover, and dished on how his All My Children role landed him not only a steady paycheck, but a lovely lady as well. I first met her in 2008 when I joined All My Children, J.R. told Billy and Kit, of girlfriend Diana Gonzalez-Jones, who was the assistant to the soaps executive producer at the time. We were friends, and, you know, it was a workplace, so you dont want to cross the line. I was respectful of that, and for about two years we were great friends. Finally, something happened, something clicked, and I just said, [Do] you ever look at me differently than just a friend? he continued, with a shy smile. And she kind of paid attention to it, and here we are! Its great. Though the relationship was slow to blossom, J.R. is glad he and Diana who can be frequently seen in the Dancing audience proudly supporting her man built their romance on a time-tested foundation. I think we did it a great way to have a friendship first, and then build on that, he said. As for J.Rs plans after Dancing, the eternally optimistic man to beat plans to use his newfound fame to continue his mission of helping bring awareness to the troops. I want to write a book. I want to tell people the story outside of Iraq, he told Billy and Kit. And I want to continue acting its something I really love to do. But I want to use every platform that I get no matter how big it is or how small it may be to raise awareness for all of the men and women that are serving overseas, those [who are] retired, the family members, the wounded troops that are trying to find a way to fit into the world outside of the military. Adding, If I can raise awareness, and I can be an inspiration to them and say, OK, you can find something to do outside the uniform, but at the same time inspire American to step up, and give them basic ideas of what they can do to say, Thank you thats my job. In honor of Veterans Day, the Iraq War veteran who has been named Grand Marshal of the 2012 Tournament of Roses Parade offered ideas for simple ways to make a soldiers day, and let the armed forces know they are thought of and appreciated. Write little thank you cards [and] send them to the troops, he said, emphasizing that even the smallest gesture speaks volumes to those isolated from friends and family while serving. Find ways to raise a little money, buy a DVD thats an escape. Music that kind of stuff. For more with J.R., tune in to Extreme Makeover: Home Editions Veterans Day special, Rise and Honor Friday at 8 PM on ABC, and watch J.R. and professional partner Karina Smirnoff tear it up on the Dancing with the Stars semi-finals on Monday at 8 PM on ABC. Contender: 'Extremely Noisy and extremely Close'
Although the honours buzz for this adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer's publish-9/11 urban journey continues to be very noisy, Warner Bros. is playing its cards incredibly close: Media will probably view it last but not least major challengers. Whether that's because of worry, confidence or just last-minute tinkering remains to become demonstrated, but producer Scott Rudin appears to possess put together the elements just like a master media chef.Foer's narrative -- about precocious nine-year-old Oskar's look for this is of his dad's dying on the planet Trade Center, and the grandparents' link with the firebombing of Dresden -- indicates exactly the same mixture of whimsy, magical realism, background and moral uplift permeating scribe Eric Roth's Oscar-winning "Forrest Gump" and -nominated "Benjamin Button." Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock provide B.O. insurance, and helmer Stephen Daldry has nicely shown skill with moppets in "Billy Elliot," all-star casts in "The Hrs" and weighty styles in "The Readers."Daldry, Roth, d.p. Chris Menges and editor Claire Simpson -- the final three formerly Oscared -- should figure strongly in year-finish balloting, as will the supporting turn of Max Von Sydow as Oskar's haunted dad. Recognition for that legendary Ingmar Bergman mainstay, nominated only one time before for "Pelle the Conqueror," might be viewed as past due inside a category that's already demonstrated helpful for realizing beloved veterans (Connery, Coburn, Ameche, Palance) instead of an honorary statuette. Romeo et Juliette
'Romeo et Juliette'An L.A. Opera presentation of the opera in five functions with music by Charles Gounod and libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carre. Carried out by Placido Domingo. Directed by Ian Judge.Romeo - Vittorio Grigolo
Juliet - Nino MachaidzeTo all individuals theater enthusiasts who never visit the opera, please be aware. Vittorio Grigolo in the L.A. Opera debut is delivering a luxurious but absolutely sincere Romeo that recalls the youthful John Barrymore. OK, we all know Barrymore's Shakespeare work only from photographs, but Grigolo connects all individuals gloriously over-the-top romantic poses using the remarkable sophistication of the trained dancer within this revival of Gounod's "Romeo et Juliette." To explain Tennessee Williams, who desires realism when you are able have this type of stage miracle? I adore that Grigolo offers a global-class voice, praised in the Met and Covent Garden, and the entire body of the professional soccer player? You will see quibbling from some crix corners that he isn't a genuine French stylist. He's too unreserved a artist. Granted, his Romeo may be better offered if his vocal delivery wasn't quite as full tilt sometimes. The actual great thing about this tenor is based on his mezza voce, that they spins by helping cover their an incredible legato. Who wouldn't go to see his Faust or Werther? Grigolo's real fach is most likely the verismo roles of Puccini, Giordano and Mascagni. But he's youthful, he is able to wait before he taxes his voice with a few of individuals heavier roles. At the chance of transporting in france theyOrItalian language factor too much, it is good to understand that Romeo and Juliet is really a Verona-set story immortalized through the Bard and musicalized here by Gounod, which Grigolo and the Juliet, Nino Machaidze, are Italian performers who bring the storyplot to its native land. And also to introduce another full circle, it is also appropriate that Grigolo's nearly nude love scene within Hollywood owes much to Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 "Romeo and Juliet" for Vital Pictures. Yes, there's much for non-operagoers. Machaidze's steely soprano weaves nicely with Grigolo's fine-grained tenor. She sometimes gives only an approximation from the role's requisite coloratura and her energy flagged within the concoction aria, however in individuals moments with Grigolo, she matches his emotionalism note for note. Placido Domingo requires a very stately grand opera method of this less-than-genius work, and with no dynamism of Grigolo and Machaidze to propel the background music, the performance switches to automatic pilot whenever the supporting gamers take stage. John Gunter's iron-scaffold sets recalls that old Penn Station in director Ian Judge's clever update towards the 1800s. Chorus performers putting on ring skirts ought to be advised walking up and lower open stairs without subjecting their under garments, but otherwise, his direction produces beautiful stage pictures. Erectile dysfunction Douglas choreographs some thrilling fights, and Judge's decision to possess Romeo kill Tybalt (Alexey Sayapin) having a gun as opposed to a knife fits directly into Grigolo's grand interpretation. This Romeo hates just like large because he loves.Sets, John Gunter, costumes, Tim Goodchild lighting, Nigel Levings choreography, Cat McNamee fight choreography, Erectile dysfunction Douglas. Opened up, examined November. 6, 2011. Anyhow, we've got individual and team dances on deck. Team dance scores is going to be incorporated to individual scores.David Arquette and Kym Manley: cha-chaThey have "Abracadabra," so that they are undertaking a combo of Dracula together with a magician. David makes Todd Karr, an illusionist to show some techniques. And possibly the best way to shake his sides too? The routine starts off somewhat slow, but that could be because I possibly could not tear my eyes from Kym's lacey one-piece that started growing fringe. Illusion, see? David's jobs are decent which he features a nice frame in hold, but he'll log off pace when they're from hold. His stylish action is tolerable, there's however no miracle in it (no pun intended). The whole factor overall may use more oomph and polish. Len states he's switched themselves in to a dancer, but thinks he needs more rhythm. Yeah, I'm unsure what's happening either, however i am confident people Cirque du Soleil people placed on people nude, smartly covered body suits, no? Anyway, this is a great performance, while not a great one, especially from someone like J.R. It's a tad unrefined, rushed which he's lost of sync a few occasions. Dare I believe that this really is really the very best dance in the evening up to now - yes, better yet than J.R.'s Rob's form is nearly perfect. The job is sharp, precise, and he's full of controlled aggression. Plus, he's oddly yanking off that pencil mustache. The Doyle & Darlene Show
Jenny Littleton joins Bruce Arnston to celebrate and satirize new bands inside the pleasurably absurd The Doyle & Darlene Show.
Lonesome Road Prods. in colaboration with Jim Jensen and Lisselan Prods. presents a musical in one act created by Bruce Arnston.Doyle - Bruce Arnston
Darlene - Jenny Littleton
Buddy - Matthew CarltonWhat "A Mighty Wind" did for folk music and "Altar Boyz" did for boy bands, "The Doyle & Darlene Show" does for brand new bands duos. Praising and satirizing country music's oh-so-spoofable conventions and stars, the show remains playing one evening each week in Nashville for any very long time now seeks a sit-lower run in Chicago. It'll likely try taking a little effort to find its potentially broad audience in this particularly "blue" and jazzy town, but here's wanting the well-completed, pleasurably absurd piece much success, and Doyle much luck on his ongoing recovery. The show features the imaginary re-emergence of Doyle Mayfield (author-composer Bruce Arnston), a once-effective songwriter and star giving his comeback concert after no less than 10 years of alcoholism together with other much-known-to but mysterious lower-lowness. He works, obviously, with Darlene (Jenny Littleton), although this time around around she's his "third Darlene," just one mother he found undertaking inside a VFW facility. We don't know very well what increased being of his "second Darlene," other than she appeared to become his third wife, the marriage didn't finish well, which all of us must have discover about this people a very long time ago. Arnston, who written tunes for and completed inside the "Ernest" photos, makes Doyle a superbly identifiable character and plays Doyle's cluelessness that belongs to them misogyny concentrating on the same perfect pitch as his singing. Even his red-colored-colored suit boasts two silhouettes round the pockets that seem to be like advertisements for just about any stripper club. Nevertheless the raison d'etre in the piece is Arnston's place-on tunes. Oftentimes, the overall game game titles alone are sufficient that will help you giggle: "Whine Whine Twang Twang," "When you're Playing Other Women (Consider Me)," "I Ain't No Homo (But Guy You Sure Look Wonderful in my opinion)." Arnston and Littleton deliver these together with your polish and emotional reliability that you're tapping your foot whenever you laugh. The show has room for growth, particular outdoors of the Nashville home, where it's completed inside a well-known Bluegrass venue. You can suppose context adding a helpful atmosphere that set designer Kevin Depinet can't quite re-create inside the Royal George's personality-less "cabaret" space, no matter your time and effort of because the walls with posters. As well as the piece may use more depth inside the Doyle-Darlene relationship as well as the plotting -- the next person onstage, Doyle's buddy Buddy (Matthew Carlton), signifies at first that individuals don't offer Doyle a glass or two, and that means you barely need to question what Doyle could eventually remove through the concert's "intermission" (the figures obtain one everyone else doesn't). The story's apparent climax comes off as too episodically detached -- it's another funny bit, while not easily easily the funniest. However, once the worst you'll be able to say of a show is always that it's funny throughout and contains trouble topping itself, that ought to hardly be referred to like a weakness. Musical Amounts: "Grandmother Flickertail," "Whine Whine Twang Twang," "When you're Playing Other Women (Consider Me)," "Stock Vehicle Love," "Barefoot and Pregnant," "I Ain't No Homo (But Guy You Sure Look Wonderful in my opinion)," "Be Still My Heart," "Blue Stretch Pants," "ABC's of love,In . Dwts: Chaz Bono Goes Home
Chaz Bono, Lacey Schwimmer You'll be able to only think about the enormity in the pressure on Chaz Bono throughout his six-week work on Dwts: He was the little one of Cher, one of the world's finest stars, he'd bad knees and was terribly overweight, and there has been gossips of dying risks because his presence around the program made him the poster boy for your transgender community. Really, the show's impressive security presence - large, beefy males that are scattered with the ballroom - was always elevated when Chaz was on stage. But he ongoing to become a humble, dignified, good-humored guy, holding their very own when faced with low scores, sometimes-harsh critique, and endless media questions. He only lost his awesome once, Monday evening, after judge Bruno Tonioli in contrast him to "a lovely little penguin." But even that didn't get him lower for extended. "I used to be mad last evening," states Bono. "But that's not what that is about, not a few things i came on here to accomplish. I came here showing people a effective, proud transgender guy. I'm just grateful to own recently been through it. I'm not departing this show bitter or angry or anything. It absolutely was a great, existence changing experience."His elimination may also are actually wish fulfillment. Behind the curtain, the word is always that Bono was greater than ready to remove his dancing shoes. "He actually was tired," certifies one of many sources within the show. "He was worrying relating to this all week. He didn't think he might take proper care of the dancing. Chaz required it home."Really the only other footnote within the show is: Through the videotaped segment that re-written the Monday evening throw-lower between mind judge Len Goodman and professional Maksim Chmerkovskiy inside the dancing of Maks' celebrity partner Hope Solo, Goodman held his hands to his temple, shielding his eyes within the screen, and looking out like he was suffering an Excedrin headache. If the was over, he didn't look just a little sorry, just glad he didn't must give consideration to any longer.Tonioli didn't look sorry either, after hearing Bono complain on tape the judge's "little penguin" comments made Bono appear like "someone body fat troll dancing using this beautiful lady [his professional partner, Lacey Schwimmer]." When the show visited commercial break, Tonioli put his hands towards the studio audience as if to convey, "Create a relaxation.InchSign as much as TV Guide Magazine Today!

Report: Lindsay Lohan May Pose in Playboy for 'Nearly' $1 Million
It's blast from the past week on the DVD front: Director Joe Johnston's 'Captain America: The First Avenger' takes us back to an earlier time (World War II, to be exact) in America, when ordinary men could become superheroes, fighting evil without any emotional baggage getting in the way; the 'Jurassic Park Ultimate Trilogy (Blu-ray)' takes us back 18 years to revisit Steven Spielberg's realistic dinosaur creations. Read on. 'Captain America: The First Avenger' What It's About: Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), a 90-pound-weakling who just wants to fight the Germans during World War II but keeps getting rejected for military duty, volunteers for a top secret government research project that turns him into Captain America, a superhero dedicated to defending America's ideals. Captain America teams up with best friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and special agent Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) to wage war on the evil HYDRA organization, a Nazi offshoot bent on world domination that's headed up by the villainous Red Skull (Hugo Weaving). It's pure good vs. evil in an old-fashioned blockbuster sort of way. It's Kinda Like: 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' meets 'Superman' (1978) What We Say: 'Captain America' harks back to the comic book days of yore when our supereheroes were not riddled with angst and had one mission in mind: Rid the world of evildoers. Director Joe Johnston, no stranger to straight-ahead action ('The Rocketeer,' 'Jumanji,' 'Jurassic Park III'), runs with the pulpy, retro scenario without tongue in check or ironic flourishes and just gives us two hours of pure entertainment. It's not complicated or full of itself and definitely not silly like this year's two previous superhero outings. And, to top it off, the acting is solid: kudos to Evans, Atwell, Weaving and to Stanley Tucci and Tommy Lee Jones, who turn in delightful supporting roles. • Extras: The Blu-ray disc includes commentary, deleted scenes, seven featurettes that explore the making of the movie and the comic book origins of 'Captain America.' Rotten Tomatoes Reviews | Buy DVD | Save DVD to your Netflix queue Watch an exclusive clip: 'Jurassic Park Ultimate Trilogy (Blu-ray)' What's the Deal? Steven Spielberg is a trailblazer: He ushered in the modern era of blockbusters with his smash hit 'Jaws' in 1975, redefined the action-adventure genre with 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' in 1981, and then legitimized computer-rendering of monsters in 'Jurassic Park' in 1993. The dinosaurs in 'Jurassic Park' were so realistic looking that they still hold up even when compared to the best that 21st century CGI has to offer. The acting was top notch and the story was intelligent and realistic, with plenty of thrilling jolts in just the right places. 'The Lost World: Jurassic Park,' also directed by Spielberg, and 'Jurassic Park III,' directed by Joe Johnston, carried the franchise further along in action and adventure. Fans have been waiting for Blu-ray versions of the trilogy, and Universal has obliged them with this release. Special Features: The three-disc set has hours of bonus features ported over from the previous DVD release; there's also a new 'Return to Jurassic Park' six-part documentary that features new interviews with many of the cast members from all three films, the filmmakers and Spielberg. Kermit as Mogul, Farting Fozzie Bear: How Disney's Muppets Movie Has Purists Rattled
This article first appeared in the Oct. 28 issue of The Hollywood Reporter.our editor recommends'Muppets': Full Trailer of the Jason Segel-Amy Adams Film Surfaces (Video)'The Muppets' at D23: Jason Segel Talks About Their Comedic Influence (Video)'The Muppets' Trailer Showcases Hollywood Cameos (Video)'Green Lantern's' Ryan Reynolds Gets Punked By the Muppets (Video)'Muppets' Movie Soundtrack Features Feist, Flight of the Conchords, Andrew BirdMuppets Creator Jim Henson Honored on 75th BirthdayOK Go Party With the Muppets (Video) Adams, Cooper and Jones joining Muppets movie (exclusive) We're trying to get the old gang back together again!" says a voice that unmistakably belongs to Kermit the Frog, in one of the many Muppets trailers the Disney marketing machine has lobbed onto the web in recent weeks. "We haven't done this in a long time," says another, somewhat anxious voice, recognizable to some as Fozzie Bear's. And it's true -- they haven't done it in a long time. A whole generation might not recognize Fozzie Bear or even Kermit in the fur, much less the sound of their voices. And that's the challenge as Disney prepares to launch the Muppets into theaters for the first time in more than a decade. VIDEO: 'The Muppets' Trailer Showcases Hollywood Cameos The stakes are high, but not because the film's budget, in the $40 million range, represents an enormous financial gamble or because the hit-hungry Rich Ross regime could use a win. If The Muppets scores, Disney finally will have figured out how to relaunch a neglected franchise that was among the most storied in the media world, solving a puzzle that has baffled the company since it acquired the iconic characters in 2004. Disney has been working with a vengeance in anticipation of the film's Nov. 23 release to trend up the characters online, including amusing spoofs of such films as The Hangover Part II and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. A song sung by stars Jason Segel and Amy Adams premiered on Ryan Seacrest's radio show Oct. 12. The studio has been buoyed by strong test screenings, and based on Internet chatter, anticipation for the film is high. But the Muppets haven't been in theaters since Muppets From Space tanked for Sony in 1999. According to a Muppets veteran, toward the end of his life, Muppets creator Jim Henson was finding it a challenge to keep his creatures in the public eye. He was operating independently in an era of media concentration, which helps explain his decision to sell to Disney. "It was difficult even before Jim died [in 1990], and it became very, very difficult after Jim died," says this insider ruefully. "We had the characters still doing things but without a constant, in-your-face exposure that something like The Simpsons has. ... They lost a generation." VIDEO: 'The Muppets' at D23: Jason Segel Talks About Their Comedic Influence So this is the Muppets' big chance. "A feature film can be a very powerful way to relaunch a brand," says kids TV veteran Toper Taylor, president of Cookie Jar Entertainment. "Hopefully they'll be able to bottle lightning once again." Certainly it worked for Sony with The Smurfs. It had been a couple of decades since the blue creatures had their heyday, and the studio brought them roaring back with a worldwide gross of more than $540 million. (With a $110 million budget, the wager was far higher than Disney's on the Muppets.) But in relaunching brands, Taylor says, it's crucial to make sure you "don't disenchant their core audience." That is where the path for the Muppets is challenging. The old Muppets guard -- a group of writers and performers involved in creating the franchise -- is eager for the neglected troupe to shine again, almost desperate in their longing for the film to work. But though they have not yet seen it, some wonder whether screenwriter and star Segel -- an obsessed Muppets fan -- has a true grasp of the characters they helped create. SAG, AFTRA tout merger progress
Plans to merge Hollywood's two biggest performer unions remain on track as reps of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists continue targeting January for completing a final proposal.
SAG and AFTRA issued a joint statement Wednesday, a day after a five-day meeting concluded, asserting that the confab had been "remarkably productive." It was the third formal confab of the Group for One Union, which received updates from the workgroups in Governance & Structure; Finance & Dues; Collective Bargaining; Pension, Health & Retirement; Operations & Staff; and Member Education & Outreach. As with the two previous meetings in June and August, the unions disclosed only general details about the substance of discusssions.
Proponents have argued that a combined union would be more powerful and remove jurisdictional overlaps. Opponents have contended that the new union should be for actors only but SAG voters have been backing pro-merger candidates overwhelmingly in recent elections. Should the proposal be approved in January by the national boards, members could be asked to vote by next spring in a contest that would require 60% of those voting in each union to approve. SAG currently has about 120,000 members while AFTRA has about 70,000 with about 45,000 performers belonging to both unions. "This was a remarkably productive meeting and we made solid progress across the full spectrum of issues we have to consider," said SAG president Ken Howard and AFTRA president Roberta Reardon. "The members and staff of both unions continue to work as a true team, and our efforts continue to prove that our shared interests are far greater than any differences we have. "The entertainment and media industries are evolving more quickly than ever, and the chance to bring our unions together is a golden opportunity -- one we plan to take full advantage of. We're committed to preserving the best aspects of SAG and AFTRA while we build a powerful new union that will be even better equipped to take on the emerging realities we're facing. One thing is certain: We're much stronger together than we are apart." Contact Dave McNary at dave.mcnary@variety.com

Individuals reviews of approaching back-to-back "Transformers" sequels with Michael Bay back in the helm with Jason Statham riding shotgun? Seems like there's under you would think on that one. Statham themself stated lack of knowledge concerning the "Transformers" gossips within an interview with MTV News, and today Bay is distancing themself in the Autobots and Decepticons too. UPDATE: Hulu Owners Abruptly Call Off Sale So What Went Wrong?
UPDATE: Today News Corporation, Providence Equity Partners, The Walt Disney Company, and the Hulu senior management team issued a joint statement that it was terminating the sale of Hulu.”We look forward to working together to continue mapping out its path to even greater success.”(Full statement below.) So what went wrong?A lot of things. But people close to the process tell me that one problem was particularly difficult to overcome: Comcast, Disney, and News Corp could never agree on the scope of the programming they were willing to offer someone buying Hulu. This was especially true foradvertising supported VOD, the kind of service that Hulu offers now. Hulu simply wasn’t worth much if the sellers wouldn’t throw in exclusive rights to stream popular first-runshows.Sources tell me that Disney was more open to offering hit programming, and therefore to a Hulu sale, than News Corp was — even thoughNews Corp’s digital chiefJon Miller was the point person in wrangling the bids. (Comcast had to give up its vote at Hulu to win federal approval for its acquisition of NBCUniversal.) As far as the actual bidding, Dish Network was willing to bargain but offered less than the $2B that the sellers wanted. Google was willing to pay a lot more, only if it included lots of exclusive programming guarantees. But the thing to remember is that all three of Hulu’s main backers collect a lot of cash from cable channels — and therefore have a lot at stake in the ability of cable and satellite companies to roll out ‘TV Everywhere’ services. The concept is that pay TV providers will offer you the ability to watch first-run shows on demand on smartphones and tablets without extra cost, as long as you’re a subscriber. If Hulu has compelling ad-supported content available for free, then consumers would have an incentive to cut the cable TV cord. Programmers don’t have to think hard about that choice. Even though Hulu is an established service and TV Everywhere is just getting started, cable and satellite companies collectively have a lot more customers than Hulu probably ever will. PREVIOUS 4:40 PM: Here’s the official announcement: Los Angeles, NY & Providence, RI October 13, 2011 The following is a joint statement from Hulu owners News Corporation, Providence Equity Partners, The Walt Disney Company and the Hulu senior management team: Since Hulu holds a unique and compelling strategic value to each of its owners, we have terminated the sale process and look forward to working together to continue mapping out its path to even greater success. Our focus now rests solely on ensuring that our efforts as owners contribute in a meaningful way to the exciting future that lies ahead for Hulu.

Johnny Depp Lone Ranger Project Reportedly Back On for Slightly Less Stupid Money
When Disney pulled the plug on its expensive Lone Ranger project, which was to reunite Pirates of the Caribbean cohorts Johnny Depp, Jerry Bruckheimer, and Gore Verbinski, a few industry-watchers held out hope that the studio and the filmmakers would yet still reach an agreement over how many hundreds of millions of dollars the would-be franchise would cost. Almost exactly two months later, it seems they’ve reached that compromise. More stupid money for someone! From Deadline: On Lone Ranger, there has been a lot of behind-the-scenes drama as the three principal players made concessions in their deals, and worked on the script to salvage the spectacle that made the movie worth making in the first place while bringing the budget down to a more manageable figure in the $215 million range. So, not quite the affordable $200 million that Disney reportedly initially wanted, but definitely less costly than the $250 million or more that the production was threatening to cost. $215 million makes it ever so cheaper than all but the last three Pirates movies, which cost a reported $225M (2006’s Dead Man’s Chest), $300M (2007’s At World’s End), and $250M (2011’s On Stranger Tides). It remains to be seen if any further drastic creative changes will be implemented, especially given that naysayers took license at August’s project-halting announcement to blast certain rumored fantastical elements in the script which I won’t spoil here. Consider that a free litmus test, Disney. Deadline’s Mike Fleming thinks it unlikely for Lone Ranger’s initial December 2012 release date to stand, which solves at least one of the five challenges the project faces which Movieline pinpointed last August. But, all things considered, is it wise for Bruckheimer, Disney & Co. to move forward after such a public false start? Weigh in below. ‘The Lone Ranger’ Saddling Up With Johnny Depp And A Tighter Budget [Deadline]
